Is it fair to say that most people in small communities now get their local news through Facebook groups? I’d assume though the subjects discussed are not the same.
According to Gallup & the Knight foundation, as of 2022,14% of Americans report getting their local news from their local newspaper. This roughly equals the % engaging with Facebook, Snap, or Reddit (13%) for local news.
Aside from the commonly cited issues with traditional social media for news, I think small, underserved communities will most suffer from a lack of transparency and oversight into their local governments that independent newspapers have traditionally provided communities.

Yes I think you’re right. Full time journalists are much better positioned to provide oversight than members of the community.
